Dr. Jayes was trained at Harvard Medical School with his internship and residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York and New England Medical Center in Boston. His exposure to the crush of patients lacking basic primary care in upper Manhattan started a career caring for and teaching about the importance of comprehensive primary care.Dr. Jayes led primary care teams at GW in his early years while providing palliative end-of-life care for patients in the early AIDS epidemic. This experience led to an interest into the care of the frail elderly and other severely ill patients and he became Board Certified in Geriatrics as well as Hospice and Palliative Medicine. In 2000, after reducing and later discontinuing his care of patients in the office, Dr. Jayes began to care for patients who were too ill or infirm to attend the clinic; those in nursing homes, assisted living, hospices, and private homes. In 2004, along with other colleagues in the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Care, he founded the GW MFA House Call Program. This program now sees over 350 homebound patients and teaches students and residents about the special needs of the homebound and terminally ill.Dr. Jayes is passionately committed to seeing that systems of primary care in the country serve the frailest patients that have the greatest needs. He is pleased to have the support of the MFA Leadership in this effort.
