Catherine Varnum, MD MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine.Dr. Varnum received her BA with a major in Biochemistry from Vassar College. After college, she completed a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at The George Washington University – Milken Institute School of Public Health, performing research for her Master's thesis at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. She attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD where she participated in the primary care track program. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine-Primary Care at New York University (NYU), serving patients in three hospital settings and two ambulatory clinics. While at NYU, she also contributed to the development of the telemedicine resident curriculum.,
Dr. Varnum is passionate about understanding and implementing strategies to improve primary care health outcomes and patient satisfaction. In her role as the Quality Lead for the Division of General Internal Medicine, she incorporates a team-based approach to managing patient care. She also enjoys teaching and mentoring medical trainees, focusing on physical as well as psychosocial contributors to patient health. In her clinical care, she is interested in patient wellness and prevention. She values meaningful connections with her colleagues in Medicine and long-term relationships with her patients. As a DC native, Dr. Varnum to be home in the DC area and at GWU to continue her medical career.
